SLATE STONE VENEER FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is the Slate Collection made from real stone, and how is it so thin?
Yes. STONOVIA’s Slate Collection is crafted from 100% natural slate blocks, using a stone-peeling technique that creates ultra-thin yet durable sheets. Each veneer is peeled directly from slate slabs, resulting in authentic, one-of-a-kind textures. Because of this, no two pieces are exactly the same — tones, veins, and patterns will naturally vary, especially if veneers come from different stone slabs. For a more visually consistent result, we recommend ordering all needed pieces of the same size at the same time.
What sizes are available for the Slate Collection?
Standard sheet sizes are 2′ × 4′ (24″ × 48″) and 4′ × 8′ (48″ × 96″), with select styles also available in 4′ × 10′ (48″ × 120″). Custom sizes are not available, so design planning should be based on these standard dimensions.
Is the Slate Collection scratch-resistant?
While durable, some Slate decors such as Asita and Mantra may not be fully scratch-resistant due to their layered texture. To help protect the surface and prevent scratches, we strongly recommend applying a stone protection sealant after installation.
On which surfaces can the Slate Collection be installed, and what is the installation process?
These ultra-thin slate veneers can be applied to a wide variety offlat or curved substrates, such asgypsum board (drywall), MDF, wood, metal, concrete, glass, tile, and other common building materials. The substrate must beclean and smooth. Edges should be masked prior to adhesive application to prevent staining. After applying adhesive to the back or substrate, a pressure roller is used to secure the veneer to the surface. If you’re installing overexisting tileoruneven brick walls, we recommendparging—applying a thin, smooth layer of mortar or filler compound—to level the surface before installation. Once the parging layer is cured and smooth, you can proceed with adhesive and veneer application as usual.
Are they suitable for outdoor use, fireplaces, ceilings, or floors?
Yes. The Slate Collection is waterproof and heat-resistant up to 400 °F, making it suitable for interior and exterior walls, including fireplace surrounds (but not for direct flame contact). It’s also suitable for curved surfaces and ceiling installations (provided they're flat and clean). However, it's not recommended for flooring or countertops due to its textured surface and maintenance requirements.
Will the color or texture change over time?
Because it’s real stone, slight natural oxidation or weathering may occur over time, especially with outdoor use. However, these changes are usually minimal and part of the natural aging process. Based on our internal testing, any change in color or texture is very minimal. Sealing the veneer can help enhance and preserve the original color and texture.
